Great White Egret Ornament
This beautiful bird is also known as the American Egret, common egret, or the angel bird. It can be spotted in many of the marshes and tidal rivers surrounding Charleston and the Lowcountry, and is popular in many kinds of local art. In the early 20th century, its population was greatly decreased by the demand for its feathers for women’s fashion. With protection of its wetland habitats and offshore nesting sites, it may recover.
Dimensions: 5 X 2 X 1.5 (HxLxW)
Materials: Each figurative glass ornament is hand crafted in age-old tradition using the same techniques that originated in the 1800's. Molten glass is mouth-blown into finely carved molds, before a hot solution of liquid silver is poured inside. The ornaments are then hand-painted and glittered in a series of labor-intensive steps to achieve the beautiful creations.
